What this site does

TrueTotal is a free calculator that shows shoppers the real, tax-included price of something in any US state. Since US price tags almost never include sales tax, and the rate is different in every state (and often every city), it's easy to be surprised at checkout — especially for visitors and new residents. Enter a price and a state to see the total, or enter a budget to see the most you can spend before tax pushes you over it.

Where the numbers come from

Tax rates are sourced from the Tax Foundation's published State and Local Sales Tax Rates report (as of January 1, 2026) and are averages of each state's base rate combined with its average local rate. They're estimates, not a substitute for the exact rate at a specific address — see our Terms of Use for details.

Who runs this site

TrueTotal is an independent, single-purpose tool. It is not affiliated with the IRS, any US state tax authority, or the Tax Foundation. It doesn't require an account, doesn't sell anything, and doesn't store the numbers you type in.
